This past Thursday, 23 September, Western Australians gathered outside Parliament House as part of a peaceful protest against the lack of animal welfare enforcement for sheep leaving the shores of WA. Demonstrators showed their support for Lisa Baker, MLA for Maylands who has been lobbying to reinstate the Animal Welfare Inspectorate Unit in Western Australia.
Dawn Lowe of Animals Angels encouraged the crowd to urge the government to listen to their animal welfare concerns. Also on hand were Paul Papillia, Shadow Minister for Local Government and several other local politicians.
According to the website Western Australia - Animal Welfare:
"Lisa used her Parliament time to air a passionate grievance against Minister [John] Castrilli, in full support of the Protest attendees, who gathered in the public gallery. Lisa articulately voiced her concern for the animals who have gone 12 months without inspection... She even produced RECENT photos showing cruelty and neglect, in an Industry the Government has decided can self regulate."
If you were unable to attend the event, but would like to tell the government that you're appalled by the lack of animal welfare inspection standards in WA, you can click here to learn how to take action.

obsolutely in human we have all the facilities here to export meat not live stock makes me sick to think about it please stop live export.
etaner
ester,
Over the last few years the amounts of chilled meat shipped to the Middle East has steadily increased. At the same time the number of live sheep being exported there have almost halved.
But the people of the Middle East still require some live animals and Australia have the best sheep and the highest standards for transport. That’s why want our sheep.
If the people in the Middle East knew that the live sheep exported are fed pellets full of antibiotics to prevent illness amongst the sheep perhaps they would prefer chilled meat. Many sheep become ill from the lengthy stressful trip, antibiotics are needed to help stop illness spread through all the sheep. Humans are growing resistance to antibiotics because they are eating them daily! Sheep are an delightful harmless animal, they have been proven to have great memory skills, emotions and intelligence. I have raised many orphaned lambs and have witnessed it. Sheep are treated so cruelly just because they are in large numbers but each sheep suffers individual enormous stress and despair from the way it is treated. Give these wonderful animals a chance to enjoy a quality of life. Every living being deserves to feel happiness and loved. Sheep included! Stop treating them with such disgusting disregarded greedy methods just for the sake of human greed. Compassion is desperately needed. PLEASE STOP LIVE EXPORT OF OUR ANIMALS.
